It was into this world that Jennifer Worth entered as a trainee midwife. But docklands life was tough, and babies were often born in slum conditions.

In funny, disturbing and heartbreaking stories, Jennifer Worth recounts her time among nuns, prostitutes, abortionists, bigamists, gangsters and expectant mothers, portraying East Enders' amazing resilience - and their warmth and humour in the face of hardship. Written with affection and nostalgia, her midwife stories chronicle the lives, traditions and tales of a bygone era.Direct download links available for PRETITLE The Complete Call the Midwife Stories: True Stories of the East End in the 1950s [Kindle Edition] POSTTITLE

Fans of the tv series will enjoy this collection as it expands on stories from the show. Although sometimes repetitive you do get extra details and new tales of this time in British social history. Well worth reading!

Call the Midwife is set in the slums of post war London iand is such a genuine portrayal of the invaluable work of midwives in ensuring a well mother and baby. In earlier times women were attended by untrained women who had a reputation for dishonesty, at times making off with the patient's valuables. Hygiene was not a priority. They were not always reliable either.

This fine group of midwives, led by nursing nuns, brought a high standard of care to East End London. So many stories of pregnancy and birth.

This book brought back all my memories of being a midwife, although I always worked in hospitals. I am just so happy to find a book which tells everyone what wonderful people midwives are!
