Expanded and fully revised, this third edition enlists advances in neurobiology and recent clinical developments to explain with renewed clarity the concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. Features of this edition are clinical advances in antipsychotic and antidepressant therapy. It includes new coverage of sleep disorders, chronic pain, and disorders of impulse control. This remains the essential text for students, scientists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.

The biochemical illustrations are excellent but the text is lacking in nuance. (Maybe that book would require another thousand pages.) The author, in my opinion, is far too keen on a strict medical model and acceptance of DSM IV TR "disorders" and outlier conditions as diseases for which there is a pill lying in wait. The text glosses over these controversies the way that Powerpoint does at a pharma sponsored CME conference.

Nevertheless the chapter on antidepressant augmentation was excellent, though in practice I think it is foolish to use lithium for unipolar depression augmentation because it is the easiest drug to overdose on (and of course one of the big selling points of the SSRIs over TCAs to begin with was the safety factor in a suicide attempt.) One treatment that I was not aware of, and I will definitely start using in refractory cases, is MTHF supplementation which appears very safe and effective. I also learned quite a bit about alpha-2-delta ligands in the excellent chapter on ion channel blockers.

One chapter I had a lot of problems with was sleep disorders. In my opinion, the author is too cavalier about using benzo hypnotics, despite the fact that most evidence based treatment guidelines (i.e ACOEM) specifically warn against this except as a very short-term solution. I am disappointed that he failed to mention that these a history of alcohol or drug dependence changes the whole treatment paradigm. He seems enthusiastic about the "Z" hypnotics despite the scandalous promotion of Ambien as nonaddictive, a claim the manufacturer Aventis was forced to rescind. Not to mention the literature on sleepwalking and sleep driving with this drug (the Patrick Kennedy incident may have been related to this).

I am in a graduate program for ACNP, and this book is the one chosen for my course. I have never really had an opinion one way or another about the textbook chosen for any of my classes before, but this one is so horrible, I just had to say something about it for anyone considering utilizing this textbook.

It is absolutely full of grammatical errors (i.e. see the section on Beta-Blockers and self-contradictions (i.e. use of Benadryl in pregnancy), and I have noticed it omits a lot of relevant information about some medications. In addition, a lot of space is wasted on ridiculous photographs with captions such as "Pregnant Woman" and "Elderly Couple," as though we have never seen an example of either of those things before and require a visual.

Between the shoddy editing job and condescending photos, I have a hard time trusting much of what this textbook has to offer. In this profession, accurate, resourceful references should be utilized on-the-job and this book won't do that for me. I can't wait for the end of this semester so I can take this book off my shelf and replace it with one that meets those professional standards!

I am a BSN nursing student and this second edition of Gutierrez is awesome. Even better than the first. Although the writing style is still a little dry, the text is logically arranged and punctuated by case studies and meaningful tables. The pathophysiology included in the chapters helps me to understand not only the disease process but the reasons certain drugs are used. I thought the title might be a problem but my instructors says it makes no difference what the title is because the book contains information for both inpatient and outpatient settings. Keep up the good work Gutierrez. My classmates are looking forward to the next edition.

As a pharmacist, this is a great go-to-book to reference whenever I need an immediate answer on dosing for an infant/child/adolescent. Especially in babies where the information is not always the easiest to locate as a pharmacist, this book has cleared up some important questions and problems that I have encountered in the past.

I was looking to upgrade my clinic's reference library, and this was the perfect one to accomplish that. Lexicomp is the best.

I totally DISAGREE with the inappropriate review from the so-called educated "SNOB" trying to knock the entire series down by labeling prospective buyers as lazy and only looking for quick and easy ways to learn! I personally own seven books from the Incredibly Easy/Visual Series and would HIGHLY recommend all of them. They are wonderful books. I am a visual learner myself and things started clicking for me when I put this series of books together with my text books.

If Mr. Las Vegas REALLY has an ADVANCED degree, then why did he purchase a book with this title in the first place? Is he a professor or something and looking for a supplement book for his pupils?

I am a nursing student with Adult ADHD/Bipolar Disorder. I also carry a 3.97 GPA and it's NOT EASY by a long-shot. I think if a person can find a book that helps them halfway understand the subject matter better, then power to them! EVERYONE LEARNS DIFFERENTLY at different paces.

The purpose of this series is not to TEACH. It provides a testing tool; practice questions for exam or NCLEX prep. If you want to learn about calcium channel blockers, read your textbook or turn to one of Lippincotts other books. I also recommend Lippincott's Clinical Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy book. The text my prof used in my pharm class was very poor. But I read it anyway. Then, when I was beginning my prep for each exam, I would read through the Made Incredibly Easy chapters in the drug classes specific to what my exam would cover. Then I would use the software to practice. I found this very helpful with probably THE hardest class a nursing student has to slog through.
