(1 reviews) Author: ISBN : 9780962652387 New from $309.95 Format: PDFThe purpose of this work is to present in a single convenient source the current essential information on the disposition of the chemicals and drugs most frequently encountered in episodes of human poisoning. The data included relate to the body fluid concentrations of substances in normal or therapeutic situations, concentrations in fluids and tissues in instances of toxicity and the known metabolic fate of these substances in man. Brief mention is made of specific analytical procedures that are applicable to the determination of each substance and its active metabolites in biological specimens. It is expected that such information will be of particular interest and use to toxicologists, pharmacologists, clinical chemists and clinicians who have need either to conduct an analytical search for these materials in specimens of human origin or to interpret analytical data resulting from such a search.

Book Review

Review of: Disposition of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Man, 9th edition
Reference: Disposition of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Man. Randall C. Baselt. Seal Beach, California: Biomedical Publications, 9th edition, 2011, 1900 pp., ISBN 978-0-9626523-8-7.
The Disposition of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Man is among the most popular reference books for forensic toxicologists and pathologists. For those unfamiliar with the text, it includes one to three page descriptions of potential toxins presented in alphabetic order. Each description follows a common format making it easy to locate critical information. The segment begins by listing the half-life, volume of distribution, bioavailability, pKa, blood to plasma ratio and a chemical structure. The narrative portion of the description is organized into Occurrence and Usage, Blood Concentration, Metabolism and Excretion, Toxicity, Analysis and References. It is one of few texts that presents expected postmortem blood and tissue concentrations when these have been published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
The ninth edition continues Dr. Baselt's tradition of excellence adding 280 more drugs or chemicals. The additional substances have emerged as important potential toxins from new therapies, dietary supplements and environmental contaminants. A new nine-page segment entitled Guidelines for Interpretation of Analytical Toxicology Results was written by Robert J. Flanagan, Ph.D., himself the author of a toxicology textbook. This is an important addition that Dr. Baselt states was requested by many readers. It also debuts a needed response to a warning given to many of us over the past years by the late Irving Sunshine, Ph.D.
