First off, Medical Insurance is a very dry topic and it's hard to listen to a professor lecture about it for hours. But if you're in the market to learn about Medical Insurance and you want to take some beginner steps, this book is very helpful.

There are only 7 chapters in this book and they go over the following topics:
1) From Prescription to Payment: Becoming a Pharmacy Technician Insurance Specialist
2) Medicolegal Issues and the Pharmacy
3) Private Insurance and the Pharmacy
4) Medicare
5) Medcaid, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, Worker's Compensation, and Discount Card Programs
6) Claim Preparation and Transmission
and
7) Processing Claims and Reconciling Accounts.

Landing at 180 pages including the appendix, the chapters are relatively short and easy to read through in a couple of sittings. Each chapter has a Chapter Summary with Chapter Review Questions which are comprise of Multiple Choice, Matching, True/False, and Short Answer. However, there are no answers provided anywhere in the book so, aside from truly knowing the information, it's hard to check to make sure you have the correct answers. The glossary in the book is fairly short but it does contain all the important words in there to help you out.

Because this book was published in 2009, there are some bits of information that are out of date, so keep that in mind when you're reading through the material. Also on page 113, there is an instance where the book refers to the NPI number formally known as the NABP number which is incorrect.

Overall, this book will help you gain an understanding of how Medical Insurance works and how it relates to a pharmacy. Keep in mind though, you may run into situations in the pharmacy that are not covered in this book, but some of the same concepts you learn in this book can be applied.

With the proliferation of dietary supplements and wild claims of OTC remedies, it is a good source to get all of the details you need on them in a single source. Although you can get all of the information on-line, it is very useful if you want info on the spur of the moment without having to get and search on the internet.
By DR BELA S BUSLIG
I was looking for a comprehensive encyclopedia of natural remedies. The pages in this book are put to better use in the recycling bin. The list of remedies is extremely limited and I could have gotten the information from any popular magazine or newspaper article. The PDR is a resource for the manufactured drug corporations, which contribute the information on their manufactured drugs so don't waste your time on it.

Overview: Many physiological changes occur with aging, some of which affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications. For many drugs, exact dosing guidelines for geriatric patients have not been established and most references do not specifically address the use of medications in the elderly. The "Geriatric Dosage Handbook" provides specific considerations when using drug therapy in older adults, compiled from the current literature and clinical experience. Benefits: This resource contains geriatric-sensitive information throughout each drug monograph, including extensive content on drug interactions and drug dosing in the elderly and adults, as well as in patients with renal/hepatic impairment. Tall-Man lettering is used to help distinguish between look-a-like medication names. A complete Pharmacologic Category Index and Appendix provide valuable supplemental information.

This is a good book. It explains what happens when a certain pathway is malfunctioning. However, I wish that it was a little more clear in explaining certain pathways. (It assumes you really know biochemistry).
By A. Carter
For those who like pictures along with their text, this book is great. Even though biochemistry is a detailed subject this book is not too weighed down in details and will allow you to understand the material fairly well. However, I stared to turn to it more as a reference than a main source. This may be because I thought that it was not calibrated appropriately for the usmle. It seems to be written more for a biochemistry class. It lacks in clinical correlations, the ability to be quickly reviewed, and there are precious few questions to get down the material at the end of each chapter. One feature that was nice, however, was a summary section at the end of each chapter. It is definitely not a comprehensive summary, but it does allow a quick summary of good things to know. All in all, a good book to have with you, but not the best source for the boards.

Great book to use in the ICU! It has come in very handy when I have multiple drips to run. It allows me to see compatibilities with other drips and the nursing implications in a nutshell! It is concise and accurate. Thanks!
